Executive Committee Summary of Minutes September 24 & 25, 1999
The Executive Committee met in New York City at the offices of the Bishop for the Armed Services, Healthcare and Prison Ministries of the Episcopal Church. In addition to news about the recent election of the Rev. Canon George Packard to the high office of Suffragan Bishop for the Armed Services, Healthcare and Prison Ministries, other discussions ensued during the two days of meetings. The AEHC website, and the Communication Officers report, were principle topics, as well as a conference call to our website representative, Mr. Scot Shepard of DigitalX. Chaplain David Henritzy presented the agenda for the Chaplains Conference being held at Kanuga, October 24th 28th, entitled The Work and Wonder of this Ministry. Included in this first gathering of chaplains in all areas of specialized ministry (military, VA, prison and healthcare chaplains), were several professional panels. Rod Pierce, Wayne Kinyon, and Larry Burton represented healthcare chaplaincy. Rod was planning to speak of the changing face of professional chaplaincy in the Episcopal Church. Wayne agreed to address the various dynamics of specialty chaplaincy in healthcare. Larry Burton, President of the Association of Professional Chaplains would be offering trends in professional chaplaincy that will challenge all religious denominations in the near-term. A centerpiece to the conference was to thank Bishop Charles Keyser for his ministry in service of the specialized ministries of chaplaincy as retirement nears. It was anticipated that George Packard and his wife Brook, would also be able to attend. Rod Pierce has agreed to edit and publish the next issue of Chaplair. This will be his final edition; a new editor is being sought. The EC thanked Rod for the many years he has overseen the Chaplair publication. Nominations are being sought for the office of Secretary. The EC thanked the Rev. Peggy Muncie for her willingness to complete the unexpired term of that office, which was vacated when Daniel Grossoehme became President-elect at the Kansas City annual Meeting. A brief discussion was held regarding planning for the next annual meeting of AEHC, to be held in Charlotte, NC February 26 March 1, 2000. This will be in conjunction with APC and NACC. David Henritzy shared design concepts for the booth at General Convention in Denver 2000. This booth will be fully funded by OBAF. Twenty-five percent of the space will be for AEHC. Marshall Scott will work with David on the plans. Mike Stewart presented the proposed year 2000 operating budget. Discussion centered around increasing diocesan dues as AEHC continues to educate bishops on the value of chaplaincy to their ministries. The budget was passed after placing a budget line item of twelve hundred dollars for General Convention. The meeting was adjourned at noon. There was a spirit of accomplishment and fellowship at the work concluded.
